Villari's Karate Combinations

It has been nearly 2 years since I trained in a dojo. The last time I exited a Villari’s Shaolin Kempo Karate dojo, I was a 2nd degree black belt with all of the material needed to test for my 3rd degree. There are no Villari’s in the Triangle and I have yet to find a dojo I would be willing to attend. Granted, I haven’t spent much effort looking. Life has been busy with getting married, buying a house, switching jobs, etc.

Through all of that time, my training has been sporadic at best and material slips in and out of my mind. With effort, I can recall everything, but I am certain it is not 100% the same as when I learned it and was actively training. One of the issues is that after training for nearly a decade I can adapt different strikes/movements to material and make it work. It all flows naturally, but it’s not the core movements taught with each combination.

With that said, below are all of the combinations that I remember as I am currently practicing them. The steps are not entirely complete, but may serve as a reference to jar your memory.

Indented lines happen at same (or close) time as previous unindented line. All instructions assume opponent attacking with right front/hook punch.

Combo 1: Left leg forward. Cat back with left monkey paw block. Step in lock target’s right arm with your left. Right palm strike to left side of face Right chicken wrist to right side of face. Step through with right leg Sweep with right leg Right tiger claw to throat Right Front punch to third eye Right Chop to throat

Combo 2: Left leg foward Step foward with right leg Block #3 Right back two knuckle punch to chin Shuffle in Elbow to soloplex Clockwise circle with right arm Strike just below knee with forearm (sweeping leg) Step out with left Wrap leg with left arm Chop to groin

Combo 3: Left leg forward Step forward with left Open palm Block #4 Right thrust punch to stomach Slide left hand up and grap shoulder Pull shoulder down and toward you Right thrust punch to right side of face Right hand grabs left shoulder Pull left shoulder toward you and down Push right shoulder down and away Left front punch to face

Combo 4: Left leg forward Block #5 Grab forearm and clockwise circle Tiger claw raking down left side of face Right Roundhouse kick to stomach (opponent falls) Stomp groin with right leg Jump and land both legs on biceps Immortal man to the eyes Trigger fingers to eyes Step off left Inside kick to right side of face Stomp or side kick to head

Combo 5: Left leg forward Step forward with right leg Grap forearm with left hand Chop bicep with right hand Twist arm counter clockwise to lock Break arm with right knee Pull arm down with hands Right backfist to right side of face Side kick to ribs (or knee)

Combo 6: Left leg forward Block #4 with open palm Front ball kick to stomach Cross and cover

Combo 7: Left leg forward Lean left Side kick to ribs Cross and cover

Combo 8: Left leg forward Step back with right leg Block #2 with open palm Grab and twist arm counter clockwise Right snap kick to groin Right roundhouse kick to stomach Cross and cover

Combo 9: Combo 8 without cross and cover Land right leg crossed (your) left leg Rising right forearm breaks locked arm Right side kick to ribs Cross and cover

Combo 10: Left leg forward Right leg steps in Block #2 with open palm Right hand spears groin Right Bear paw to left ear Left arm wraps right arm Right hand grabs head and twists counter clockwise Step back with left leg Drop horse stance Wrap and lock arm tight Two solid chops to the soloplex Chop to the throat

Combo 11: Left leg forward Cat back Block #4 with open palm Right trigger finger to right temple Step in with left leg Left palm strike to right side of face (hand slides in from block) Right elbow to hib Left inside wrist to back of right knee (dropping opponent onto back) Wrap right arm around right leg Step in and drop knee in to groin Lift opponent with wrapped leg Roll opponent clockwise onto stomach Step through holding leg Pull leg toward opponents head Right Rising heel to right ribs Drop heel to left ribs (Strattle opponent on landing) Turn counter clockwise Axe kick to right side of head

Combo 12: Left leg forward Step out to right Left ball kick to stomach Right back kick to ribs

Combo 13:
This is meant to be done with a belt or rope, but instructions are adaptation without

Left leg forward Block #4 with open palm. Pushing right arm Right back two knuckle to chin Left hand spear guides head counter clockwise Right hand grabs left side of head Left hand grabs right side of head Twist clockwise and drop stance (Opponent facing away) Pull head over shoulder (breaking neck)

Combo 14: Left leg forward Block #2 with open palm Jumping (scissor kick?) front right ball kick to soloplex Left leg stretches back during kick Land with left leg forward

Combo 15: Left leg forward Step forward and across with right leg in to twist stance Block #4 then #1 with open palms Step forward with left leg and back with right leg landing in forward leaning stance Left arm around throat Right hand over top of head gouge eyes Force opponent’s back on to your knee Right Tiger Palm down face and body Release throat Right Tiger claw back toward face elbowing chin Drop right elbow on face Right hammer fist to stomach Step out with left leg Double palm to the face as opponent drops

Combo 16: Left leg forward Trap punch with forearms (or palms) Right front ball kick to stomach Right leg lands back Locking arm and pulling opponent forward down to knee Left leg steps over arm and stomps (breaking arm) Opponents right arm should face thumb down Twist your body clockwise (breaking arm again) Twist your body counter clockwise Releasing arm Left palm pushes head down Right back two knuckle punch to c3

Combo 17: Left leg forward Slip punch toward the right Double strike: Left palm to face Right palm to groin Left arm wraps opponents right arm Right hand gouges left eye and grabs head Step back with left leg bring opponent to ground Twist head counter clockwise Lock arm Right thrust punch to ribs (just below armpit) Left thrust punch to ribs Right spear hand to throat

Combo 18: Left leg forward Cat back Left palm circle blocks down (#4 to #8) Step in with left leg Left back fist to left face Grab head with left Step back with left leg Pulling opponent forward and down Drop right elbow on to c3 Right circle hammer to left side of face

Combo 19: Left leg forward Block #2 with open palm Front ball kick to stomach Landing forward Left palm strike to right side of face Grab head with left and pull down exposing neck Drop right elbow on neck Right hand grabs inside of right thigh Flip opponent in clockwise motion Right hand circles up and toward you Left hand pushes head down and away Left hand exposes throat Right hand chop to throat

Combo 20: Left leg forward Block #2 Lean back Step in with left leg Wrap arm Right knife hand to nose Right elbow to face while sweeping opponent with right leg (similar to take down in combo 1) Right thrust punch to chin Right spear to throat

Combo 21: Left leg forward Block #6 Right hand spears bicep (between muscle and bone) Step through under arm Both hands holding wrist Right back fist to elbow Right back fist to back of head Left leg tiger stomp to back of knee Pushing knee to ground Spinning axe kick to back of head Step through with left

Combo 22: Left leg forward Step in with left while rising circular blocking with both hands clockwise with right (first) counter clockwise with left Right hand spears in to throat Left leg steps into horse stance (left leg is behind opponent and your body should be touching off balance opponent) Left hand spears past throat Drop opponent Left elbow to throat/chest Left knee to knee Twist clockwise Right leg stomps head

Combo 23: Left leg forward Trap wrist with both hands Pulling arm toward you with a wide “U” motion Left hammer fist to ribs Right hammer fist to ribs Right Rising eagle claw to throat Left palm to back of head (Lifing opponents body so it’s straight) Right leg steps through so your butt is touching their hib Reach behind you with left hand and grab right leg (not through legs) Can shift right hand so forearm is across neck Pivot opponents body so it is horizontal across your back (If this take any effort, you’re doing it wrong) Drop horse stance (breaking opponents back) Either flip opponent using head as pivot or drop to ground

Combo 24: Left leg forward Block strike downward with crossed forearms direct strike to left of body so you don’t guide in to groin or stomach Step up with left so legs are even Uncross arms while raking face Step forward with left leg Drive thumbs in to eyes

Combo 25: Left leg forward Block #2 with open palm Cat back Right spears throat Step in with left Left knife hand to throat Right knife hand to throat Left palm strike to ear (or side of face) as left leg lands

Combo 26:
Similar flow as combo 21

Left leg forward Block #6 Right hand spears bicep (between muscle and bone) Step through under arm Right elbow to stomach Right palm to groin Left forearm sweeps right leg just below knee Rising circular motion Right hand chops groin (or thrust punch)

Combo 27: Left leg forward Left dropping palm block Right hand counter clockwise circles back Right knife hand to nose Step in Left chop to throat Straighten opponents right arm with your right hand Twist clockwise and step behind opponent with right leg Wrap opponents right arm with left arm before step Elbow to lower spine Step around with left leg Willow palm to back of head

Combo 28: Left leg forward Trap punch with palms Double clockwise motion with right hand grabbing first Left arm crosses under right and grabs further up on the arm Right hook kick to the back of the head Leg lands behind opponent Left heel in to groin Twist right and sweep with right leg Right ridge hand to left collar bone (or throat) Right hand snake pokes to eyes

Combo 29: Left leg forward Block #2 with open palm Step across with right leg Roll right backfist over your left arm into opponents face (right side) Right hand grabs around neck (eagle claw) Fingers should be in carotid artery Opponent should be leaning back slightly resting against your forearm Step around with the left Right hand pulls opponent down Left hand chop to heart Both hands rake across body from outside toward center Raise stance as your arms cross Drop both forearms down on opponent Left hand grabs & rips throat (tiger claw) Step across opponent with left leg Rising heel kick to face Right leg stops face

Combo 30: Left leg forward Step in with right leg Block #6 Right thrust punch to stomach Step across with left leg in to a scissor sweep Left leg above waist in front of opponent Right leg behind knees Left hand grabbing opponents gi at shoulder helps Right hand slaps as you land (cheater way is to keep right hand on ground during the sweep) Right leg kicks face Either top of straight foot or shin Roll back over right shoulder on to feet

Combo 3#:
Same flow as 21

Left leg forward Block #6 Right hand spears bicep (between muscle and bone) Step through with right leg Both hands grab wrist and twist elbow counter clockwise (faces down) Break elbow on left shoulder Left heel kick to groin Sweep opponent using arm and stepping back with right leg Counter clockwise circular “U” motion (past right side of your body) (make sure to keep arm close to you) Right leg stops across face Still holding arm that should be between your legs Twist body counter clockwise Drop right knee to ground (shin on throat) Still holding arm Stand and step over head with right leg (breaking arm) Spinning (counter clockwise) axe kick to left side of face Release arm

Combo 3#: Left leg forward Left palm blocks down and across Pushing toward opponent body Right hand circles clockwise (in and up) Right forearm strikes right side of opponent’s throat Your left arm guides opponents right arm in clockwise circle (in and up) Right hand grabs back of neck and pulls down Right knee to chest As knee lands push twist head clockwise and down across The opponent should be guided on to their back with head resting on your left knee Quick circular strikes (out, down, then in) Right hand rakes face Left hand rakes face Drop right elbow on face

Combo 3#: Left leg forward Left palm block in clockwise circle down Right hand chop to right side of neck Right knee to chest Pull head down with right hand Land out and to the right Step through with left leg Wrap left arm over head in to head lock (body facing same direction as opponent) Raise your body to crank the head lock Small step forward with left leg Twist body clockwise Right elbow strikes side of head Right arm goes under and around head Double palm strike Left palm strikes right ear Right palm strikes above left ear

Hey! your page is really helpful! I am going to be joining Shaolin Kempo Karate soon. I wanted to learn several things before I actually join, so I won’t be a completely lost white belt.

I just have one question.
What are the blocks you are talking about? In some cases say something like “use block #4.” Could you post how to do those blocks or explain what they are, please :D?

Kevin, the numbered blocks are part of the 8 point blocking systems that you will be taught upon joining. I learned the blocks during the initial free lesson before attending my first class.
