Bees Are All The Buzz

I’ve been spending a lot of free time reading up on apiculture. I plan on building a KTBH over the winter and getting bees sometime next spring. Alissa and I both plan on taking a beekeeping course so we have more of an idea about what we’re doing.
When I read through the town ordinances, I did not see anything that would prevent me from keeping honey bees. The hive will not be visible from the street and will only be visible by one neighbor, but he did not object when I mentioned us wanting to keep chickens, so I don’t think I’ll have any problems. Granted, if some one reads my blog, then they’ll definitely know. Everyone else will need to trespass on my property to get glimpse.
I’m am currently trying to figure out dimensions and materials that I’ll use for the hive. I have been toying with the idea of using trex for the sides. It would save me the trouble of painting/staining and will last a long time. It is also cheaper than cedar. The hard part would be attaching the boards to make a 12” wide wall. Home Depot only carries the 1“x6” boards. I don’t think it would be worth while to custom order two 1“x12“x12’ pieces. I’ll probably settle for whatever untreated lumber is cheap and paint it.
Whatever I decide, I’ll post build instructions with pictures. My cat tower instructions are still one of the most popular pages on my site.
