Linksys WRT54GL Router running DD-WRT

Posted:

I took advantage of some free time this weekend and finally changed from the stock Linksys firmware on my WRT54GL v1.1. I originally purchased this router over a year ago with the intention of installing either OpenWRT or DD-WRT, but never got around to it.

I ultimately chose DD-WRT because it had all of the features I wanted and seemed like it would be easier to get up and working. I flashed the firmware 3 times before running happily on version 24 sp1.

The flashing order I followed was:

  1. Linksys 4.30.12.3
  2. DD-WRT v24 sp1 mini generic
  3. DD-WRT v24 sp1 nokaid generic

Upgrading the linksys firmware was not necessary, but I was still not sure if I was going to risk bricking the router to put on DD-WRT. It went on without a hitch and I am really liking the features. It provides a lot more monitoring capabilities compared to the stock firmware. Monthly transfer totals and live bandwidth graphs are worth the risk. I almost wish that I bricked the router so I could justify buying one with a USB port.
